Here's a video of the testing done on a Stihl saw, small saw with a small log (the next one will be bigger) Pretty good objective and subjective data:

Nick. There are a lot of chainsaws where I'm at in Costa Rica and I'm going to look for one to groove soon. I assume you used the small bit, any particular tips or things to watch out for?

Hi Jonathan,
No particular tips. Just use the largest bit possible...which in this case was the small one. Be careful for breakthroughs. You may need to adjust the throttle, but most times it is fine just the way it is. Make sure to post you mods here. Best wishes. |

Hi Guys,
Given that the "chain saw" like go carts are usually half to full throttle when in use... Nick, do you think it would be a good thing to place the groove a few degrees off the idle position to get more of the "upper throttle range" for the chain saw? Also, when I did my generator (up to 17 hours compared to the 6 hours prior) I gave it a 4 to 8 smile rather than the full sweep. You could start with that... test and if the results are good stay with that... if you think you can get more, finish the groove to a full sweep and test again. Just some thoughts Karl Fortner Tacoma, Washington |

Karl,
Sounds like a great idea. Look forward to hearing the results. |
